Our Story
Sue Feller
Owner & Editor
After receiving a bachelors degree in photography from RIT in New York, I worked for a small production company in Southern CA where I shot and programmed slide shows. Eventually, I worked in the Disneyland A/V department focusing mainly on video.
After a hiatus (3 children later), I was hired by the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) in California to be in charge of everything video... videography, editing, script writing, special effects, drone work... the whole realm. It has been an incredible 19 year relationship where I have gotten to know the inner workings of the fire family, developing videos to aid them in their training and testing. Even though I recently moved to Colorado, I continue to work with LBFD and look forward to using this incredible asset to also assist other fire departments!

ABOUT SET YOUR CITY ON FIRE
The situations firefighters find themselves facing out in the field are unique and require specialized training; like most things, the more you practice, the better prepared you are. While helping the Long Beach Fire Department create content for their promotional exams (BC, Captain, and Engineer), I developed a tool that adds situational realism for the candidates. Those making the test gave me a photo of a building in Long Beach (one the candidates would recognize) and I added life-like smoke and fire. For some tests, the smoke and fire changed over time, creating visual cues for the candidates to respond appropriately in the role for which they were testing. In other training, a 30 second loop of a building on fire was used to practice consistent size ups. For engineers, multiple views of a building on fire were utilized for them to decide where to place an engine upon arrival.

Agencies who graded Long Beach's promotional exams were intrigued by the realistic smoke, fire, and use of identifiable buildings from their own cities. They began inquiring about the videos and I realized this service could be a valuable tool for other fire departments, thus Set Your City on Fire was born.
